Cineverse Launching ‘Air Bud Returns’ Theatrical Release For August 21st
February 3, 2026

Air Bud Returns will be released nationwide in theaters on August 21 through Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment. The film is not a sequel to the original Disney-distributed movies but a theatrical relaunch of the long-running Air Bud franchise.
The story returns to Fernfield, Buddy’s original hometown. It follows 13-year-old Jacob, who dreams of becoming a basketball star like his late father. After moving into his father’s childhood home, Jacob discovers a VHS tape labeled Air Bud and learns his dad once played on a team alongside the legendary basketball-playing golden retriever, Buddy. When Jacob befriends a stray golden retriever—whom he names Buddy—they form a bond and work together to unite a group of misfit players, qualify for a Christmas tournament, and pursue a championship. The film centers on themes of family legacy, belief, and playing from the heart.
The cast includes Tracy Ifeachor, Edwin Lee Gibson, Tyler Labine, and Aydin Artis. Franchise creator Robert Vince wrote and directed the film, with Anna McRoberts producing.
The release date aligns with National Golden Retriever Day on August 21. The article also notes the success of the original 1997 Air Bud film and briefly highlights Cineverse’s recent box office success with Terrifier 3.
